Director Atsuko Ishizuka’s Anime Film ‘Goodbye, Don Glees!’ Is Coming To North America

‘Goodbye, Don Glees!’ is a coming-of-age drama anime film written and directed by Atsuko Ishizuka for the Japanese animation studio Madhouse and Kadokawa Animation. The movie was a success in Japan when it was released in February of 2022. Now North American audiences will get to see it with the announcement that GKids has picked up the movie.
Not only will they bring it to theaters for North American anime fans, but they are also preparing to drop an English voice cast when it arrives in the country.
GKIDS’ President David Jesteadt expressed his enthusiasm, saying on their website, “We were all incredibly moved by Atsuko Ishizuka’s perceptive and fresh take on a classic story of teenage friendship.”
“We can’t wait for audiences to share this beautiful blend of comedy and drama, set in the days of summer when anything seems possible,” he added.
There is no word on who will join the English voice cast or a release date, as of yet. The Japanese voice talent includes Ayumu Murase, Natsuki Hanae, Yuuki Kaji, and Kana Hanazawa.
They also released a promotional poster:

Anime News Network describes the synopsis as follows,
“Two boys named Rōma and Toto meet when Rōma moves from Tokyo to the countryside, which he cannot grow accustomed to. But when he meets Toto, they become a duo, naming themselves “Don Glees.” Eventually, Toto was supposed to move out to Tokyo for school, but on the summer of their first year of high school, they meet Drop, a new addition to Don Glees, who invites them to “view the world from above.” When Rōma and Toto follow Drop, they become involved in a forest fire that gets blamed on them, and go off in search of a missing drone that has evidence of their innocence. A small incident becomes an important, life-changing journey.”
The movie was edited by Kashiko Kimura and features music from Yoshiki Fujisawa.
