Director Macon Blair Announces ‘The Toxic Avenger’ Remake Has Wrapped Production

Director Macon Blair announced on Twitter that his remake of ‘The Toxic Avengers’ has officially wrapped film. “That’s a wrap,” he wrote.

As Slash Film reports, this film will be a remake of the 1984 cult classic horror dark comedy ‘The Toxic Avenger,’ which originally starred Mitch Cohen and Kenneth Kessler as the monstrous “Toxie.” His human form was played by Mark Torgl with Peter Dinklage taking over the role for the new version. Dinklage is joined by Elijah Wood, Julia Davis, Jacob Tremblay, and Kevin Bacon, who will play the film’s villain.
The plot “centers on Melvin, a down-on-his-luck janitor who is pushed into a vat of toxic waste. This turns him into the Toxic Avenger, a superhero (of sorts) with grotesque physical mutations.”
The 1984 movie would spawn three sequels, comic books, a musical, and even a children’s animated series “Toxic Crusaders” that toned down the comedic violence of the films.
Lloyd Kaufman, who co-directed the first film, spoke with Dread Central about the remake and the direction Blair is taking the movie.
“Macon Blair knows Troma better than I do,” he said. “He’s seen everything. He’s seen the cartoon, he’s seen the Halloween special, he’s seen everything. And he loves our movies like Troma’s War and Terror Firmer. I’ve read the script and it’s better than the original and I leave it to him. If I’m called upon, I’d be happy to jump in. I learned on the musical to leave the creative to the creative. I learned to let them ask so if they want me, I’m there.”
He also joked about the possibility of bringing the reboot to the stage as a musical.
“I hope that Legendary keeps going,” Kaufman said. “If they let Macon Blair direct it, I think it will be terrific. He knows the Troma sense of humor, the combination of slapstick and satire with the environmental theme.”
