‘Joran: The Princess of Snow and Blood’ is an original anime that aired in Japan made by Bakken Record production company. It tells an alternate history fantasy where a terrorist group is stealing blue blood from “Changelings” so they can overthrow the Japanese government. One woman stands in their way.
Crunchyroll, who now has distribution rights, interviewed the director of the series to get insight into the inspiration behind the show.
“When you’re not adapting source material, there’s the upside of getting to determine everything about the story, setting, and visuals yourself, and the downside of not having a built-in hook with the audience, and I think that managing that balance can be pretty difficult,” director Susumu Kudo said on directing an original anime.
He explained, “When you’re not adapting source material, there’s the upside of getting to determine everything about the story, setting, and visuals yourself, and the downside of not having a built-in hook with the audience, and I think that managing that balance can be pretty difficult.”
We were very intentionally creating a structure where every four episodes would cover a single “chapter,” with three chapters in total, and an exciting climax at the end of each, with a story that really moves along quickly,” he explained how the show is designed. “I attended theater performances as a student for class, but after graduating, it’s been all movies for me.
When asked what he thought was unique about the show, Kudo replied, “The story being based on a fictionalized version of actual Japanese history, and it providing a unique background where a dramatic story unfolds is its biggest charm.”
‘Joran: The Princess of Snow and Blood’ is set in an alternate historical Japan, the 64th year of the Meiji era (1931 A.D.), where the shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu continued to reign over Japan instead of handing over power to a Prime Minister. Series protagonist Sawa “Yuki” Yukimura reluctantly works for the secret police known as Nue to stop a terrorist group called the Kuchinawa from stealing blue blood from citizens in order to overthrow the government.
