A theater never got its Spider-Man posters, so an employee drew one by hand
When a Canadian cinema didn’t receive its Spider-Man: Brand New Day posters, employee Drake Landon drew his own in the style of the old “Spooder-Man” meme, with an apologetic handwritten note. It went viral, and a lot of fans liked it more than the official one.
The most popular Spider-Man: Brand New Day poster at one Canadian theater wasn’t made by Marvel. It was drawn by an employee named Drake with a marker.
When the Famous Players 6 cinema in Prince George, British Columbia never received its official posters, employee Drake Landon decided the empty frame wouldn’t do.
So he drew one, a homemade take on the “Spooder-Man” meme, the crude wall-crawler sketch that’s been floating around since the early 2010s.
Underneath it, a handwritten note: “Sorry! We never recieved the real posters! Sorry for any inconviniences!”
The spelling mistakes stayed in. They’re part of why it worked.
From empty frame to viral hit
A moviegoer photographed it and posted it to Reddit, and the response built from there.
The image landed on r/marvelstudios and spread, with commenters praising Landon for making something instead of leaving the wall bare. “The theater employee taking the time to hand-draw this with a marker instead of leaving the frame blank deserves a massive promotion,” one wrote. Others called it better than most official posters and floated the idea of Marvel using it as an alternate Blu-ray cover.
A local radio station shared it on Facebook, where a commenter identifying herself as another employee’s mother named the artist and mentioned people were stopping to take photos with the drawing.
Landon told The Hollywood Reporter the reaction was “very unexpected,” and that he still hadn’t quite processed how far it had traveled.
Why it caught on when it did
One comment near the top of the thread pointed to something bigger than the drawing itself.
“My respect to the one who decided to draw it by hand instead of using AI,” it read. Studios have spent this year getting caught using AI-generated marketing, and audiences have pushed back on it each time.
A theater employee reaching for a marker was the plain opposite of that, slower and rougher and clearly made by a person, and that’s what people responded to.
It’s a small, accidental example of the kind of goodwill studios spend a fortune trying to manufacture. A hand-drawn Spider-Man in a small-town theater earned a warm, organic reaction, and it earned it precisely because no marketing department was involved.
A fitting character for it
If any hero was going to get this, Spider-Man fits.
Peter Parker has always been the everyman, the local kid, the guy from the neighborhood. A homemade, small-town, unmistakably human poster suits him better than a polished studio sheet does.
Brand New Day is setting box-office records on the strength of an enormous corporate operation, and the most charming piece of promotion tied to it came from one employee and a frame he wouldn’t leave empty. Whether the real posters ever turned up barely matters now.
