Panettiere was found unresponsive at a South Carolina residence on Sunday and pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy found no signs of trauma, and the coroner says cause and manner of death remain pending. To gamers, she was Sam in Until Dawn.
Hayden Panettiere has died at 36. Her father confirmed the news Sunday night through her representative.
To most audiences she was Claire Bennet on Heroes or Juliette Barnes on Nashville. To a generation of horror game players, she was Sam in Until Dawn, one of the performances that made the case that games could carry real screen acting.
She would have turned 37 on Friday.
What officials have said
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office released details on Monday, and the picture remains incomplete.
Police responded to an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina at around 1:50 p.m. Sunday after a 911 call from an acquaintance reporting an unresponsive woman. First responders found Panettiere in cardiac arrest and began advanced life support. Resuscitation was unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.
An autopsy was completed Monday. The coroner’s office stated that no signs of trauma were found that would have contributed to the death, and that cause and manner remain pending further investigation and additional studies.
Police said a preliminary investigation showed no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The coroner’s office and Greenville City Police are running parallel investigations.
Her father’s statement
Skip Panettiere issued a statement through her representative.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” it read. He described her as an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to everyone who knew her, and to the millions who watched her onscreen.
Why Until Dawn mattered
For D/REZZED readers, Sam is the connection, and it’s a more significant one than a celebrity voice credit usually is.
Until Dawn arrived in 2015, when full performance capture in games was still proving itself. Supermassive built the game around branching choices where any character could die, which meant the performances had to hold up across dozens of outcomes rather than one scripted path.
Panettiere’s Sam became the emotional center of that. She was frequently the character players fought hardest to keep alive, and the role is still cited when people argue about what game acting can be. She reprised it for the 2024 remake.
Her other genre work included Kirby Reed in Scream 4.
A long career, mostly spent in public
Panettiere started as a child actor and effectively never stopped.
She appeared on One Life to Live from 1994 and Guiding Light from 1997, then moved through Ally McBeal, Law & Order: SVU, and Malcolm in the Middle before Heroes made her a star in 2006. Her films included Remember the Titans, Raising Helen, Ice Princess, Bring It On: All or Nothing, and I Love You, Beth Cooper.
Nashville gave her a second defining role. Her most recent credit was the 2026 thriller Sleepwalker.
In May she published a memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, reflecting on growing up famous, motherhood, mental health, and the loss of her younger brother Jansen, who died in 2023 at 28.
What comes next
The investigation is ongoing and the coroner’s office has said no further details are available for release.
That means the responsible thing is to wait. Cause of death is undetermined, forensic work is incomplete, and anything beyond what officials have confirmed is guesswork about a woman whose family is three days into losing her.
What is settled is the work. Thirty-two years of it, starting before she was old enough to remember, and including a performance in a horror game that people are still talking about eleven years later.
