Hugh Laurie schools journalist on 'House' plot points in viral X exchange
British freelance journalist Janet Murray posted a deadpan summary of every House episode on X on June 6, 2026, joking “Eight seasons of this?” Hugh Laurie himself replied a day later.

On June 6, 2026, British freelance journalist Janet Murray (@jan_murray) posted on X what she called a summary of every episode of the medical drama House M.D. “Late to the party, but I’ve started watching Season 1 of House,“ she wrote. “Same narrative every episode: Patient has mysterious illness. Hugh Laurie (House) gets diagnosis wrong. Patient nearly dies. Hugh Laurie gets diagnosis wrong again. Gets threatened with being fired. Patient nearly dies again. Hugh Laurie has last minute leftfield idea. Gets diagnosis right. Doesn’t get fired. Eight seasons of this?“
A day later, on June 7, Hugh Laurie himself (@hughlaurie) replied. The response has now been viewed over a million times.
What Laurie actually said
Laurie’s full reply: “Thanks for your critique, Janet. We actually tried a couple of episodes where House (Hugh Laurie) (please put the brackets in the right place) gets it right first time, but they were only 6 minutes long. NBC weren’t happy. Then we tried some where House never gets it right and the patient dies. The audience wasn’t happy.“
That alone was strong. The next paragraph is where the reply went from sharp to legendary.
“One could apply your trenchant analysis to other art forms: JS Bach wrote 30 Goldberg variations on the same chord structure; Frida Kahlo painted 50 portraits of herself; Henry Moore, what??“
He continued: “The point is, or was, variations on a theme; if all you see is hospital, medical blah blah, then it wasn’t meant for you. Nonetheless, I look forward to your first novel!“
Laurie’s bracket correction at the top is the deadpan Gregory House voice landing in real life. The Bach and Kahlo references are the actual sophisticated burn. Variations on a theme is a recognized artistic structure dating back centuries.
Janet Murray took it well
Murray’s response to Laurie’s reply: “Well this was unexpected. And not the slightest bit patronising 🤣“
In a follow-up post, she added: “Woken up to a few new followers this morning. Who may be disappointed to learn that TV reviews are not usually my forte. Plus I may now be too busy working on my first novel.“
In a separate reply she said she “found his response funny.“
When one X user called Laurie’s response “classless,” Laurie replied with a single word: “OK.“
Murray is a freelance British journalist who has contributed to The Times and The Spectator, primarily writing on women’s rights and culture commentary. She is not a TV critic. The original House post was a joke.
House by the numbers
House ran for eight seasons on Fox from November 16, 2004 to May 21, 2012, producing 177 episodes. The series was nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy four times and never won. Hugh Laurie was nominated six times for the lead role and also never won.
Laurie’s performance as the misanthropic diagnostician became culturally definitive enough that his earlier comedy work in Blackadder and Jeeves and Wooster now reads as preface material to most audiences. The show remains one of the highest-rated medical dramas in television history.
Murray’s tweet is technically correct about the structural pattern. Most House episodes do follow a recognizable formula. So do most procedurals, mysteries, sitcoms, and concept albums. So do most Bach pieces. Variations on a theme is the format. Laurie just spent 30 seconds explaining that to one million viewers.
Murray got new followers. Laurie got the last word. House syndication just got a free promotional weekend.
