Kevin Smith is writing the first-ever Star Wars/Marvel crossover comic
Marvel and Lucasfilm announced Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a five-issue crossover written by Kevin Smith that drops Luke, Leia, and Vader into the main Marvel Universe to meet the Avengers and Spider-Man. It launches in January 2027 for Star Wars’ 50th anniversary.
For the first time in nearly 50 years, Luke Skywalker and Spider-Man are going to share a page, and the guy writing it grew up desperate for exactly this.
Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing announced Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a five-issue crossover event, written by Kevin Smith with art by David Marquez. Revealed via Entertainment Weekly, it’s billed as the first-ever official crossover between the Star Wars galaxy and the Marvel Universe, dropping the heroes and villains of the original trilogy into Earth-616, Marvel’s main continuity, to mix it up with the Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Doctor Doom. The first issue hits in January 2027, with the fifth landing in May, timed to the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars film.
The choice of writer is the part that clicks into place perfectly.
Why Kevin Smith is the pick
Smith isn’t a random hire. He’s arguably the most on-brand writer Marvel could have found for this.
The Clerks director is one of pop culture’s most famous, most vocal Star Wars obsessives, and a genuine comics writer with real credits, Daredevil, Green Arrow, Batman. He’s spent decades being the loudest fanboy in any room about both franchises, and now he gets to smash his two favorite toys together officially. Smith said as much, recalling that back in the early ‘80s he had a subscription to Marvel’s original Star Wars comics, and that he always wished Spider-Man or Doctor Doom could cross into that galaxy. “Nobody had to Force my hand,” he said, because of course he did.
The premise leans into the absurdity in a self-aware way: a “reality-shattering spell” causes the events of A New Hope to unfold on Earth, in front of Marvel’s heroes, which is a comic-book way of saying “we found an excuse, now enjoy the crossover.” Nobody expects this to be canon in either universe. That’s not the point.
The history that makes it fitting
There’s a genuine reason this specific pairing carries weight, and it goes back to the beginning.
Marvel and Star Wars have been linked since before the first film even came out, Marvel’s Star Wars adaptation hit shelves six weeks ahead of the 1977 premiere. And those comics matter more than most fans realize: the runaway success of Marvel’s Star Wars line in the late ‘70s is widely credited with helping pull the publisher back from the edge of bankruptcy. So a Marvel/Star Wars crossover isn’t just a fun mashup. It’s two franchises that have been financially and creatively intertwined for half a century finally doing the thing everyone assumed they’d done years ago.
What to expect
Temper the expectations in the right direction and this is exactly what it looks like.
This is a celebratory, non-canonical, smash-the-action-figures-together event, Chewbacca and the Hulk, Vader and Doctor Doom, Leia and the Avengers, built for the anniversary and for the specific joy of seeing characters who’ve never legally met finally do it. Some fans have raised an eyebrow at Smith, whose profile as a comics writer isn’t what it once was, but few would question his sincerity about the material, and sincerity is most of what a project like this needs.
It arrives, fittingly, as a farewell project tied to departing Marvel editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski, who called it one of his proudest. Fifty years after Marvel’s Star Wars comics saved the company and launched a thousand childhood imaginations, the two universes are officially colliding, written by a man who has been waiting his whole life to be asked. It won’t count for anything in either continuity. It’ll probably be a blast anyway.
