Microsoft admits Windows 11 is a memory hog and is optimizing it for 8GB PCs
Microsoft is working to shrink Windows 11’s memory footprint so it runs better on PCs with 8GB of RAM. Reports say an idle 8GB machine can use nearly 6GB before you open a single app. The timing is a RAM price crisis.
Microsoft is trying to make Windows 11 run better on PCs with 8GB of RAM, which is a quiet admission that right now, it doesn’t.
Windows and Devices president Pavan Davuluri named memory optimization as one of four focus areas for the rest of 2026. The goal, in Microsoft’s words, is to reduce the OS memory footprint to keep 8GB-and-up machines “fast and responsive.”
The reason this is needed is a little embarrassing for Microsoft, and the reason it’s urgent has nothing to do with Microsoft at all.
How much memory Windows 11 actually eats
The numbers explain the complaints.
Reports cited by outlets like Windows Latest and Notebookcheck say an idle 8GB Windows 11 laptop can sit near 6GB of used memory before you open a single app. Much of that is tied to WebView2, the Chromium-based framework running many built-in Windows apps.
One Tom’s Hardware commenter compared Windows 11 on 8GB to Windows Vista on 512MB, which is a beating, and not an unfair one.
That’s why the 8GB minimum has felt like a fiction for years. Microsoft’s official floor is 4GB, but most builders recommend 16GB for a smooth experience, and Microsoft itself has called 32GB the “no worries” config for gaming.
What Microsoft is actually changing
The company hasn’t promised specific numbers, but it has named the levers.
Microsoft says it’s using a more efficient memory allocator to cut overhead across apps, tuning WinUI 3 so apps built on it use less memory by design, and driving efficiencies in the Chromium and WebView2 components that are eating so much RAM. Alongside memory, the four-part plan covers a faster out-of-box setup, easier family and parental controls, and better voice input.
Corporate VP Marcus Ash framed it as a full-stack effort, “from the design of the pixels all the way down to the kernel scheduler and drivers.” The improvements are being tested through the Windows Insider Program now, with wider rollout expected by the end of 2026.
Why Microsoft is doing this now
Here’s the part that explains the timing, and it’s the actual story.
8GB isn’t making a comeback because anyone thinks it’s enough. It’s coming back because RAM prices are spiking, driven by AI datacenter demand gobbling up memory supply, which is pushing laptop manufacturers back toward cheaper 8GB configurations. Microsoft even points to competition from Apple’s MacBook line as a pressure.
So Microsoft isn’t optimizing for 8GB out of generosity. It’s doing it because the market is forcing a return to low-memory machines, and an OS that needs 6GB just to boot is a problem when the hardware underneath is getting skinnier, not fatter.
The honest read for anyone buying now: an 8GB machine stays fine for light, focused use, and these changes should help. For heavy multitasking, creative apps, or local AI tools, 16GB is still the real floor.
Microsoft is putting Windows on a diet, but you still shouldn’t buy the smallest plate if you plan to eat.
