Pokémon Bank is shutting down in 2027, so move your Pokémon now
Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are ending Pokémon Bank on February 26, 2027, and the transfer to Pokémon HOME closes the same day. There’s no grace period. Any Pokémon left in Bank after that becomes permanently inaccessible.
If you have Pokémon parked in Pokémon Bank on an old 3DS, you have until late February to move them. After that, they’re gone.
Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are shutting down Bank, the 3DS cloud-storage service, on February 26, 2027. The detail that makes this urgent: the transfer function to the newer Pokémon HOME app closes on the same day, with no grace period afterward. Whatever’s still in Bank at that point can’t be reached again.
For a lot of players, this is the last window to rescue years of Pokémon.
Why it’s a bigger deal than it looks
Bank has quietly served as the final bridge to a large part of the series.
It was the last surviving Nintendo 3DS online service. When the 3DS eShop closed in 2023, Nintendo made Bank free and kept it running; when general 3DS online services shut down in 2024, Bank was specifically spared.
That reprieve is what’s now ending. And because Bank is the only official route from 3DS-era games, X and Y, Sun and Moon, plus the Virtual Console versions of the Gen 1 and Gen 2 classics, into the modern apps, its closure cuts off official transfers for a large share of the whole franchise. One estimate puts it above 70%.
Put simply: if a Pokémon of yours only lives on a 3DS card or inside Bank, this is the deadline to move it somewhere it can survive.
What to do
The steps are straightforward. The clock is the hard part.
Send your Pokémon from Bank to Pokémon HOME before February 26, 2027. HOME runs on Switch, iOS, and Android, and once they’re there, they’re safe and can move on to supported modern games.
A few limits worth knowing: transfers only run one direction (Bank to HOME, never back), PokéMile Points don’t carry over, and new downloads of Bank and Poké Transporter have already ended, so if it isn’t installed now, you may be locked out.
Anyone who’s been putting off consolidating a decade of Pokémon has about six months left to handle it.
The pattern underneath
This is a familiar situation by now, and not only in Pokémon.
Digital content lives at a company’s discretion, and this is another plain example. Players are being told to move their collection before a server goes dark, or lose access to creatures they spent years catching.
It sits in the same conversation as Sony ending disc production and cloud games being switched off after purchase, the recurring reminder that “owning” something digital often means holding it only until the company decides otherwise.
The Pokémon Company is easing the transition a little. HOME is adding FireRed and LeafGreen support in October, and premium HOME storage is expanding to 9,000 slots.
The core message, though, is a countdown. February 26, 2027 is the date, and after it, whatever remains in Bank stops being usable in any practical sense. The move to make is the one you make now.
