Rosario Dawson filmed a Daredevil cameo for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It got cut.
Rosario Dawson says she shot a scene as her Daredevil character Claire Temple for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, reportedly treating Peter Parker after a fight, but the cameo was cut from the final film. “I’m a reject of Spider-Man,” she joked at a fan convention.
Rosario Dawson was in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, for a little while, anyway. Then her scene ended up on the cutting room floor.
The actress revealed at GalaxyCon in Raleigh that she filmed a cameo as Claire Temple, the nurse she played across Netflix’s Daredevil and the rest of the Defenders shows, for this summer’s billion-dollar Spider-Man hit. It didn’t survive the edit. Asked by a fan which hero she’d want Claire to work with, Dawson let it slip: “I could have said Spider-Man. I even shot a scene in the new Spider-Man movie, but I got cut out.”
Her reaction to the whole thing is what makes the story fun rather than sad.
“A reject of Spider-Man”
Dawson took the cut in stride, and turned it into a bit.
“I’m a reject of Spider-Man,” she joked to the crowd, adding that she was also “a reject of the Devil’s Rejects,” a nod to another film she’d been cut from. She recalled having her celebratory social-media post ready to go, complete with behind-the-scenes photos and her grandson decked out in Spider-Man gear, when the email arrived telling her the scene was gone. Her mother, she said, was mostly upset she couldn’t post the BTS pictures, from what Dawson noted was the movie with possibly the most-viewed trailer ever.
Per reporting on the cut, the scene would have had Claire treating Peter Parker after his fight with Scorpion, a natural fit for a character whose whole role is patching up injured heroes. Writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers reportedly called the scene “very good,” but redundant in an already crowded movie, which is the usual, unglamorous reason cameos die: not quality, but runtime.
Why fans wanted her there
Claire Temple mattered more to the Marvel street-level world than her supporting billing suggested.
Introduced in 2015’s Daredevil, she became the connective tissue of Marvel’s New York corner, turning up across Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders as the one person stitching those shows together. As Marvel has folded more of that Netflix era back into the main universe, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin both back in the fold, Claire’s absence has stood out. Brand New Day, with its grounded, street-level Spider-Man and a Punisher appearance, looked like the perfect place for her to resurface.
The silver lining she’s holding onto
Dawson, for her part, isn’t treating the cut as the end of Claire.
“Because everybody’s in it, it still means that my character is somewhere in that same universe,” she said, “and I really love that. So I hope I get to be Claire again.” A shot scene that got cut is, if you squint, a kind of soft confirmation that Marvel still considers Claire part of this world, close enough to include, even if she didn’t make the final version.
There’s also a decent chance the scene surfaces anyway. Deleted cameos like this tend to show up on the eventual home release, so fans may yet see Claire patch up Peter Parker, just not in theaters. Dawson, who stays plenty busy as Ahsoka Tano over in Star Wars, seems content to wait. She’s a reject of Spider-Man for now. The MCU has a long memory for characters it likes, and it clearly likes this one.
