Sony is putting "your discs are ending" warning stickers on new PS5 boxes
New PS5 boxes are appearing with stickers warning that from January 2028, new PlayStation games will be digital only. The text matches Sony’s July announcement, and it signals Sony has no plans to reverse course.
Sony has started slapping warning stickers on new PS5 boxes telling buyers that physical PlayStation games are on their way out.
The label spells it out: “From January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”
It’s a courtesy heads-up before the shift, and it’s proof Sony isn’t backing down.
What the sticker says and where it’s showing up
The wording is a near-exact match to what Sony already published.
The text lines up with Sony’s July 1 PlayStation Blog post announcing the end of new physical disc production, and the same language now appears on Sony’s official PS5 product and purchasing pages. The sticker was first spotted by PlayStation content creator Behind the Games on X, who said the console came from a trusted source, and the same text has since turned up on European Amazon listings, likely so Sony can comply with consumer-protection laws there.
The rollout is uneven. It’s appearing on the 1TB disc-based console packaging, but in-store checks reportedly found some units without it. It’s real, but not on every box yet.
What it means for PS5 owners
The practical impact is narrower than the panic suggests.
Discs released before January 2028 keep working on disc-equipped PS5 consoles. That includes upcoming physical titles like God of War Laufey and Marvel’s Wolverine, both due before the cutoff. After January 2028, new games ship only through the PlayStation Store or as digital codes at retail.
One thing Sony hasn’t clarified: whether the PlayStation 6, rumored for fall 2027, will play discs bought before the deadline. That’s a real question for anyone building a physical library now.
The backlash isn’t slowing Sony down
This is the part that gives the sticker its bite.
Sony’s disc decision has drawn sustained anger. More than 100,000 people have reportedly signed a petition asking Sony to reverse it, and players have organized a week-long boycott called PS Blackout, set to start August 23, where participants plan to keep their consoles off and skip digital purchases.
Sony’s response to all that has been to double down. It reaffirmed the plan on a recent investor call, and now it’s printing the cutoff date on the box. Sony’s stated reason is that buying has shifted away from discs toward digital, which its own sales back up, but the sticker reads less like a data point and more like a company that has made up its mind.
The disc era has an expiration date now, and Sony is printing it on the packaging. You’ve got until January 2028 to buy the ones you want.
