Spotify is testing a button to skip podcast ads, but only the ones it doesn't sell
Spotify is testing a “Skip Ahead” button that lets Premium users jump past podcast ads and promos, with one catch: it only works on ads the show sold itself, not ads Spotify sold. Podcasters are calling it a threat to how they make money.
Spotify is trying out a button that skips podcast ads. There’s a catch big enough to have the podcast industry rattled: it only skips the ads Spotify doesn’t make money from.
The feature, called “Skip Ahead,” is in testing for some Premium users. Press it during a podcast ad or sponsor read and it jumps you to the end of the break. But it’s built to skip promotional material the show sold directly, the host-read sponsorships that independent podcasts live on, while ads that Spotify itself sells stay put, unskippable.
That split is why a small interface tweak set off a very loud reaction.
Why podcasters are alarmed
The math is simple, and it’s not in the creators’ favor.
Most ad-funded podcasts survive on direct-sold, host-read ads, the ones where the host personally pitches a mattress or a meal kit. Those reads work partly because they’re hard to skip; you sit through them to get back to the show. A button that lets listeners breeze past them, while keeping Spotify’s own ads locked in, quietly tilts the whole field toward Spotify’s ad business and away from the creators’.
The industry newsletter Podnews called it “a significant threat to ad-funded shows.” Crooked Media co-founder Tommy Vietor was blunter, posting that it was “very cool” of Spotify to “try and destroy the podcast industry.” Several major audio networks reportedly contacted Spotify to raise the alarm as soon as the test surfaced.
Spotify’s side of it
Spotify’s defense isn’t nothing, and it’s worth hearing out.
The company told publishers the feature could actually keep people listening longer, pointing to data suggesting that giving users an easy skip keeps them from bailing on an episode entirely. There’s also a real gripe underneath Spotify’s position: some shows genuinely do stuff episodes with an exhausting number of ads, and a skip button is, from a listener’s chair, a mercy. Free listeners, still most of Spotify’s 777 million users, currently sit through both Spotify’s ads and the show’s ads back to back.
Spotify also stresses this is early testing, and it’s gathering feedback. It’s not locked in, and there’s precedent for the company backing off after creator pushback, it partly reversed a play-count display last year.
The bigger squeeze
Zoom out and this fits a pattern podcasters know well.
Podcasting spent years as an open, creator-friendly format precisely because no single company controlled how the money moved. As platforms like Spotify have taken a bigger role, they’ve gained more power to set the terms, and the terms increasingly favor the platform’s own ad inventory over the creator’s. A study Podnews cited found listeners currently skip less than 10% of ad breaks, so making skipping easier, for everyone except Spotify’s advertisers, could hit direct-sold revenue hard.
Whether “Skip Ahead” survives testing is still open. But the message creators took from it was clear enough: on a platform they don’t control, the ads that keep the lights on are now optional, and the ads that pay the platform are not. Some are already talking quietly about pushing listeners back toward Apple. The button is small. What it signals about who holds the leverage in podcasting is not.
