Square Enix's profits jumped 176% by putting Final Fantasy everywhere
Square Enix’s quarterly profit soared 175.7% after Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launched on Switch 2, Xbox, and PC. The company says 90% of its sales are now digital, and it’s leaning hard into multiplatform, with a stacked release slate ahead.
Square Enix just posted a monster quarter, and the reason is simple: it stopped keeping its biggest games on one console.
For the quarter ending June 30, 2026, the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest publisher reported net sales up 32.3% to ¥78.4 billion, operating income up 88.6% to ¥17 billion, and net profit up a staggering 175.7%, nearly triple the prior year. The company also confirmed that roughly 90% of its game purchases are now digital.
The engine behind the numbers is a strategy Square Enix resisted for years and has now fully embraced.
Multiplatform is finally paying off
The turnaround is built on releasing games on more than just PlayStation.
The standout was Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which after launching on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows delivered what the company called stellar results. For years, Square Enix released its marquee titles as timed PlayStation exclusives, then watched sales disappoint.
The lesson, as one observer bluntly put it, is that selling games on more platforms means more people actually buy them.
The new HD-2D RPG The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales and strong catalog sales rounded out the growth, and every segment of the business, games, mobile, MMO, even merchandising, was up year over year.
The digital shift
The 90%-digital figure is the other headline, and it fits a growing industry pattern.
Square Enix joins Take-Two (also over 90% digital) and Capcom in confirming that physical sales are now a small slice of the business.
It’s the same data every big publisher is citing as it moves toward digital-first, or in some cases digital-only, releases, part of the wider shift that has Sony ending PlayStation disc production and GTA 6 shipping without a disc.
Catalog titles sold at near-zero marginal cost on digital storefronts are pure margin, which is a big reason profit jumped so much faster than sales.
What’s coming next
Square Enix also laid out a stacked slate, though a few details are worth caveats.
Confirmed and dated titles include Dragon Quest XI S on Switch 2, the Kingdom Hearts Collection bringing the back catalog to modern consoles, Final Fantasy Resonance (the series’ first HD-2D game, revealed in June), Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, and the sixth Final Fantasy XIV expansion, Evercold, arriving in early 2027. Further out and still undated are Kingdom Hearts 4 and Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams.
The one to flag: the widely circulated slate also lists a “Final Fantasy VII” title for spring 2027, which would be the third and final chapter of the FF7 Remake trilogy.
That game is real and expected, timed to the series’ 30th anniversary, but its final title hasn’t been officially confirmed, so treat any specific name attached to it as unofficial for now.
Why it matters
The quarter is a data point in a larger argument the whole industry is having.
Square Enix spent years as a cautionary tale about clinging to exclusivity and over-investing in games that underperformed. This result is the clearest evidence yet that going wide, more platforms, more digital, more catalog, is working for it.
The heavy hitters, FF7‘s finale, Kingdom Hearts 4, Dragon Quest XII, are still ahead, and if a quarter powered mostly by ports and back catalog looks like this, the company has reason to feel good about what’s coming. The lesson it took a decade to learn turns out to be the oldest one in retail: put the product where the customers are.
