Streamer LilyPichu is the voice of Overwatch's new tank hero D.Mon
Blizzard revealed streamer and voice actor LilyPichu as the English voice of D.Mon, the MEKA Squad leader arriving as Overwatch’s next tank on August 11. Some fans wanted a traditional actor; most point out she’s been voice acting for over a decade.
Blizzard has revealed that streamer and content creator LilyPichu is the English voice of D.Mon, the newest tank hero coming to Overwatch.
The casting was announced through a “Story Time” video, where LilyPichu reads the new comic “Growing Pains,” which follows D.Mon doubting her ability to lead the MEKA Squad after D.Va‘s departure to Overwatch. D.Mon joins as a playable tank when Season 4 begins on August 11.
As usual for a popular-creator casting, some fans grumbled.
Who D.Mon is
The new hero is stepping into a role the Overwatch story has been building toward.
D.Mon is a Korean MEKA pilot who takes over leading the MEKA Squad in Busan after D.Va leaves. Her mech is armed with a sword and shield, which points to a melee-focused tank in the vein of Reinhardt, though Blizzard hasn’t detailed her full kit yet.
The “Growing Pains” comic frames her as a leader wrestling with self-doubt, which is the emotional core LilyPichu was cast to carry.
Who LilyPichu actually is
Here’s the context the “get a real actor” crowd tends to skip.
LilyPichu, real name Lily Ki, rose to fame on Twitch and YouTube and is a member of the OfflineTV content group. But she’s not only a streamer. She’s an experienced voice actress with a decade-plus of roles across games and anime, and a musician on top of that.
So the framing of “streamer instead of a traditional voice actor” is a false choice. She is a voice actor who also streams, and the community response has leaned heavily toward pointing that out.
The “stunt casting” complaint doesn’t really land
The objection is familiar, and Overwatch has heard it before.
This isn’t Blizzard’s first creator casting, and the “stunt casting” charge comes up every time a recognizable name gets a role. The pushback tends to assume popularity and talent are opposites, which the actual performances keep disproving. One voice actor responding to the casting noted LilyPichu has “range” and a distinctive voice, and that plenty of people didn’t even clock it was her until they were told.
There’s a fair version of the concern, to be clear. Casting for marketing reach rather than fit can go wrong, and audiences are right to notice when a name gets hired over a better-suited performer.
But that’s an argument to judge each casting on the result, not a reason to assume a streamer can’t act, and the early reaction to D.Mon’s voice has mostly been positive.
Season 4 starts August 11. Players will hear D.Mon in action then and can decide for themselves. The complaint arrived, as it usually does, before anyone had actually listened.
