The Simpsons Movie 2 is a little over a year away, and after a long stretch of near-total silence, the studio says real news is finally close.
The sequel to 2007’s The Simpsons Movie is scheduled for September 3, 2027, roughly 13 months out, and it’ll mark 20 years since Homer first hit the big screen. Showrunner Matt Selman confirmed that actual details are coming at Disney’s D23 event this August and at San Diego Comic-Con 2027.
Fans have been starved for information, so even a promise of a promise counts as progress here.
What we actually know so far
The honest answer is: almost nothing, and that’s the story.
Beyond the release date, Disney and 20th Century Studios have shared essentially no details. There’s no plot, no confirmed title, and the promotional material so far amounts to a teaser poster and a couple of shots of Homer. For a movie this anticipated, arriving 13 months out, that’s a remarkably thin trickle.
Selman’s Comic-Con confirmation was that news is coming, not news itself. There was no update on the movie at SDCC 2026, just the assurance that D23 and next year’s Comic-Con will finally deliver.
The bumpy road to a sequel
Getting here took almost 20 years and a couple of shuffles.
A follow-up has been talked about since not long after the first film, and producer Al Jean confirmed one was in “very early stages” back in 2020. It formally entered production in September 2025 with a July 23, 2027 date, then got pushed to September 3, 2027, reportedly to avoid a clash with a Minecraft Movie sequel.
The delay had a knock-on effect worth noting: The Simpsons Movie 2 took over a Disney release slot previously held by an untitled Marvel film, which means there’ll be no new Marvel movie between Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027. Homer is, in a small way, filling a Marvel-shaped hole in the schedule.
Why the wait, and why now?
The gap between announcement and information is the frustrating part, but there’s a logic to it.
The Simpsons is the longest-running scripted series in American TV history, already renewed through a 40th season in 2028-29, so the movie isn’t a do-or-die swing, it’s a bonus for a franchise that never left. That takes some pressure off the marketing timeline, which is partly why Disney can afford to drip-feed.
Still, 13 months out with only a donut poster to show is testing fans’ patience. The promise is that D23 in a couple of weeks breaks the seal.
Whether that means a trailer, a title, or just another shot of Homer, Selman isn’t saying, which is, fittingly, one more thing to wait for.
