Warner Bros. just confirmed Hogwarts Legacy 2 in a shareholder letter
Warner Bros. Discovery named “the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy” directly in its Q2 shareholder letter, the clearest official confirmation of the sequel yet. There’s no title, date, or gameplay, and it comes as WBD admits its recent games underperformed.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 is official. The confirmation didn’t come in a trailer, though, but in a line of corporate paperwork.
Warner Bros. Discovery named “the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy“ directly in its Q2 2026 shareholder letter, published August 6, listing it among the games in its pipeline. It’s the clearest official word yet on a sequel fans have anticipated since the first game became a hit.
“We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy,” the letter reads.
No title. No date. No gameplay. One sentence in a financial filing.
Why a shareholder letter, and why now
The dry delivery says something about the state of WB’s games business.
The original Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling game of 2023, moving more than 40 million copies and clearing $1 billion, so a sequel was never really a question, developer Avalanche Software has been hiring for it openly. What the letter does is put it on the official record, and it does that for a reason.
In the same document, WBD acknowledged its first-half 2026 game releases “fell short of expectations,” and set out a plan to narrow to four $1 billion-plus franchises with “disciplined investment behind fewer, higher-conviction titles.”
Hogwarts Legacy is clearly one of those four. After a rough stretch, WBD is telling investors it plans to lean on its proven earners, and few things it owns have earned like the wizarding-world RPG.
What we might get
The details are thin, though the hiring offers a hint.
Avalanche job listings have asked for experience with “live-service games for an Online Multiplayer RPG,” which has fed speculation the sequel could add multiplayer or live-service elements, a direction some players want and others, who valued the first game as a single-player experience, don’t.
None of it is confirmed, and WBD hasn’t described the game at all. There’s also the open question of how it relates to HBO’s coming Harry Potter series, another wizarding-world bet the company mentioned in the same letter.
The baggage it carries
A sequel this size arrives with the debates the first one started.
Hogwarts Legacy was both a commercial giant and a flashpoint, drawing boycotts and heated argument tied to Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling’s public statements, alongside in-game criticisms about missing features like Quidditch and the light consequences for using dark magic. The sequel walks back into all of it: the enormous built-in audience and the controversy that trailed the first game throughout. WBD is betting the audience outweighs the backlash. The first game’s 40 million copies suggest that’s a reasonable bet, which is why a single sentence in a shareholder letter was enough to make news. The wizarding world stays one of the most valuable, and most contested, properties Warner Bros. holds.
