Slice-Of-Life Anime ‘Komi Can’t Communicate’ Gets An English Dub

‘Komi Can’t Communicate’ is a slice-of-life manga written and illustrated by Tomohito Oda and published by Shogakukan. Its story of a teenager suffering from social anxiety wanting to make friends proved popular among readers which expanded when Viz Media released the manga in the United States. This led to an anime adaption directed by Ayumu Watanabe and Kazuki Kawagoe for the Japanese animation studio OLM which was released in North America on Netflix. Crunchyroll reports that VSI Los Angles produced an English dub for the streaming service, being released in early February 2022.
Taking on the protagonist Komi is ‘Fairy Tail’ voice actress Amber Lee Connors, who expressed her excitement on social media.

“I’m beyond ecstatic to announce you can hear me as Shoko Komi in ‘Komi Can’t Communicate.'” she wrote. “This role is incredibly special to me, as someone who grew up with severe social anxiety & worked hard to overcome it. You can check the dub out on Netflix now!”
The rest of the cast includes Kyle McCarley as Hitohito Tadano, Skyler Davenport as Najimi Osana, Casey Mongillo as Nene Onemine, Cherami Leigh as Omoharu Nakanaka, Cristina Vee as Ren Yamai, and Amber May as the narrator.

Wikipedia describes the synopsis as follows,
“On her first day attending the elite Itan Private High School, Shouko Komi immediately receives an overwhelming surge in popularity due to the unprecedented stoic beauty and refined elegance her classmates perceive her to possess. However, only Hitohito Tadano, an exceedingly average schoolboy who sits next to her, discovers that behind her bishōjo appearance, Komi has a severe communication disorder. Subsequently, Tadano resolves to help Komi reach her goal of 100 friends.”
‘Komi Can’t Communicate’ has been renewed for a second season set to premiere in April 2022.
Atsuko Nakajima handled the character designs for the show with Deko Akao handling the scripts.
