Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow Kickoff Hasbro’s Mego G.I. Joe Line

How many of you had Mego action figures growing up? OK, the name may not ring a bell, but if you had a bunch of 8″ figures with cloth outfits and they ranged from Planet of the Apes to DC, to Marvel, to Sonny and Cher, then you certainly had a Mego or two. The Mego Corporation loved having a diversified portfolio of licenses to pull from to make action figures. So you could have a crossover with literally any property that was hot in the 1970s and early ’80s.
Over the past few years, the Mego line has come back into the mainstream, kind of. They’re not lining the toy aisles, but you can usually find them in the “collectibles” endcaps at Target or Walmart. The company has continued to produce a diverse line of toys. We found Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka right next to the 2003 Leatherface just last week, for example. Those are cool for the adult collector, but what about the kids? How do you draw them into this kind of toyline?
By making G.I. Joes! OK, it may be nothing more than a fun little one-off, but Hasbro is producing two figures from the long-running action figure property. The two characters that are getting the Mego treatment are Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. When thinking of ultimate rivalries, those two are the first that come to mind, with a close second behind Duke and Cobra Commander.
