How many of you had Mego action figures growing up? OK, the name may not ring a bell, but if you had a bunch of 8″ figures with cloth outfits and they ranged from Planet of the Apes to DC, to Marvel, to Sonny and Cher, then you certainly had a Mego or two. The Mego Corporation loved having a diversified portfolio of licenses to pull from to make action figures. So you could have a crossover with literally any property that was hot in the 1970s and early ’80s.
Over the past few years, the Mego line has come back into the mainstream, kind of. They’re not lining the toy aisles, but you can usually find them in the “collectibles” endcaps at Target or Walmart. The company has continued to produce a diverse line of toys. We found Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka right next to the 2003 Leatherface just last week, for example. Those are cool for the adult collector, but what about the kids? How do you draw them into this kind of toyline?
By making G.I. Joes! OK, it may be nothing more than a fun little one-off, but Hasbro is producing two figures from the long-running action figure property. The two characters that are getting the Mego treatment are Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. When thinking of ultimate rivalries, those two are the first that come to mind, with a close second behind Duke and Cobra Commander.
Snake Eyes. Storm Shadow. A rivalry for the ages, born out of the shattered bond between brothers-in-arms. We’ve teamed up with Mego Corporation, creators of a classic action figure style with soft goods costume pieces, to bring these iconic G.I. Joe characters into the fun, retro Mego style for the first time ever… with the same premium details G.I. Joe fans look for.
The retro figures will come with the following features and accessories:
- Legendary Hasbro characters in a nostalgic, 8-inch-scale Mego style
- Premium Hasbro attention to detail
- Detailed helmet sculpt and paint hits honor the OG characters
- Removeable, premium soft-goods ninja costume pieces with character-inspired detailing
- Character-inspired weapon and gear accessories
- Highly poseable for play or display… your way
- Collectible packaging inspired by classic G.I. Joe cardbacks
Pre-orders have already started, and the two-pack is expected to ship in the Fall of 2021. These rivals will cost $59.99, and right now, they are only shipping in the US.
