Sonic Omens Is Incredible

It’s hard to know what to call Sonic Omens. Is it a fangame if it has a major production crew behind it? Maybe it’s more aptly referred to as a third party, non-monetized Sonic the Hedgehog game. However you wish to categorize the Sonic game not sanctioned or licensed by SEGA, and which is free, one thing is for certain: the developers of the game, under the direction of Alex Dmitriev, have knocked it out of the park.

That’s not to say that this game is perfect. The episodic content is said to have some bugs and glitches that diminish the experience. But overall, and considering this is a game created by fans of the series with no economic benefit, this is a tremendous success. While we wait for SEGA to release the next big Sonic the Hedgehog game (and seriously, make Sonic Mania 2 no matter what the issues are), Sonic Omens is the type of fan creation that gives the primary developers a run for their money.

The graphics are miraculous for a passion project. The audio is above average. Even the design of mixing Sonic Boost style gameplay with Sonic Adventure exploration is an upgrade over recent modern Sonic offerings. And considering that Christian Whitehead was eventually brought on board to develop 2D Sonic games after his passion projects, who knows? Maybe Alex Dmitriev is the next big Sonic the Hedgehog 3D Game Designer, and we’re just now discovering his tremendous talents.

You can currently find Sonic Omens for PC only. For more information on video games, Sonic the Hedgehog, and pop culture, keep coming back to D-Rezzed!
