The tech market is currently experiencing significant issues with supply chains. The common culprit is a chip shortage. This problem affects the console manufacturers Sony and Microsoft and even the manufacturers of CCTV cameras and fire alarm control panels. Speaking from direct experience, the bottleneck is causing 5-6 month lead times for even a single device.

Forrester‘s Research Director Glenn O’Donnell has advised that the shortage could last into 2023. In his blog, O’Donnell says, “Because demand will remain high and supply will remain constrained, we expect this shortage to last through 2022 and into 2023.”

The Research Director further went on to explain that the current geopolitical tensions between many countries and China may worsen or prolong the situation, “If sanctions tighten, US exports to China will drop further, spawning even more domestic expansion in China. In addition, Chinese tech companies like Huawei are already making lots of chips. The result will be a stronger Chinese supply, further escalating trade tensions. Still, even at China‚Äôs blistering pace of innovation, a sufficient Chinese supply is at least two years away.
